“Feeding our senses a stimuli that is so similar to what we see in reality, that we interpret it as reality. In all other mediums your consciousness is interpreting a medium… But in VR there is no gap. You aren’t internalizing it. You are internal in it. It’s a quantum leap in mediums because the medium is disappearing.” – Chris Milk, Founder of VRSE
CONSIDERATION #32 – “DIGITAL DUALISM”
PREFACE
Welcome Everybody!
The Tao Te Ching and the I Ching represents the apex of understanding regarding Eastern Dualism. However, Digital Technology reflects the pinnacle of Western understanding. The main distinction being that the Eastern perspective enables you to experience oneness and transcend dualism while the Western perspective gives you the power to control physical reality through dualism. You can even create your own unique digital realities. It could certainly be argued that nothing has changed our current reality more than computers. They are in fact now ubiquitous in our everyday life experience. However, what, exactly, are they? And more importantly, how do they work?
CONSIDERATION #32 – Digital Dualism
Digital Dualism
“I want to put a ding in the universe.”
– Steve Jobs
It is no surprise that the scientific method would eventually be applied to dualism itself. The culmination of this approach has resulted in the current paradigm shift that I call Digital Dualism. This shift has altered human focus, veering it away from learning to recognize the patterns of opposites in our reality, to using those patterns to directly create a whole new reality. Here is how it works.
“…the Central Processing Unit (CPU) functions as the brain of the machine; allowing it to access and process “a priori” information…”
A modern computer consists of essentially three parts. First, the physical components manifesting the essential structure of the machine, which corresponds to the human body. Second, the Central Processing Unit (CPU) functions as the brain of the machine; allowing it to access and process “a priori” information from the third part of the system called software, which is composed of Binary Code. Binary code informs the CPU, allowing it to “run” the information through the processes of the “body” and “brain” until we get a pre-determined outcome based on the body, brain, and code that we are using. Binary code consists of pre-grouped sets of code called “bytes,” broken into smaller units called bits. Bits represent the basic unit of binary code, the fundamental building block of digital code, which runs all digital technology.
“For the first time, the pure abstraction of the human mind can affect the manifestation of a whole new world: the digital world.”
A bit represents the possibility of only two choices: “0” or “1.” This expresses the same basic rational knowledge of dualism that separated human beings from other animals in the Biblical story of creation related in Genesis. Good or Evil? Day or Night? On or Off? 0 or 1? From this simple formula, human beings have transformed our limited analog world, into a digital world of endless possibility and reproduction. For the first time, the pure abstraction of the human mind can affect the manifestation of a whole new world: the digital world. We are the gods and creators of this new domain. We are the Unmoved Mover of digital reality; a non-digital entity, responsible for creating and bringing into existence the entire digital world.
POSTSCRIPT
The essence of digital technology is dualism. Anything related to your computer is a result of dualism. This dualism consists of two choices: “0” or “1” often referred to as “On” and “Off.” However, it is essentially no different than “Good” and “Evil” or “Yin” and “Yang.” All of these are examples of dualism. Dualism always represents a choice between only two possibilities. However, this apparent simplicity, of having only two choices, actually represents the possibility of essentially unlimited choices once generated into reality. We are now almost at a point where we can create digital realities that are virtually indistinguishable from physical reality. Therefore, we must ask ourselves: What is the “real” difference?
Next week we consider the nature of “analog” reality.
